Description
This official wartime formal portrait photograph of Winston Churchill (originally taken April 1, 1942 by photographer Walter Stoneman), is here mounted on Stoneman’s backstamped photo card and signed: ”Winston S. Churchill” in ink beneath the image on the card’s lower border.
The print (measuring 4 x 5 inches), the signature and the mount (5 x 7 inches) are all in uniquely pristine condition. What distinguishes this photograph, however, is the original presentation note that accompanies it. Typed on 10 Downing Street, Whitehall notepaper that lacks the header of “The Prime Minister,” the note reads: With Mr. Churchill’s Compliments. A Souvenir of 10, Downing Street 1940-1945, and is dated “26th July, 1945,” the day of Churchill’s resignation as Prime Minister.
