Collector's Guide
A History of the English-Speaking Peoples was Winston Churchill’s last great work; a sweeping, four-volume history of England, her colonies, and the language that Churchill so venerated and ennobled in his own writings. Published nearly twenty years after Churchill composed his first draft in the late-1930s, the books were released after the war simultaneously in Britain, the U.S., and Canada over a period of three years. The original English edition was handsomely printed, the American and Canadian editions less so. Subsequent re-issues and abridgments abound.
Description
This very good later English edition set, in dust jackets, was the property of Winston Churchill’s nephew, John Churchill, whose name is hand-written in ink on the front free endpaper of Volume I: “John Spencer Churchill.”
JOHN SPENCER CHURCHILL (1909-1992) was the son of Winston Churchill’s brother, Jack. A noted painter and sculptor, he also was a stockbroker, like his father. His sister Clarissa was married to Anthony Eden.
Volume I of this set was printed in 1976; Volume II in 1977; Volumes III and IV in 1980. The dust jackets of all volumes are glossy versions of the originals, as issued, bright and fresh, with the spine color faded on Volume III. Each volume, except Volume IV, is neatly price-clipped. The contents of all volumes are fine, the books are pristine and the association, impeccable.
