Description
This is a very good two-volume set of the First English edition without dust jackets. The covers are lightly soiled, and Volume II is a bit buckled on and near the spine, indicating exposure to water (a few rear pages are stained red where the cloth ran). The corners are bumped, and there is some fraying around the edges; else fine. Contents fine.
The best biography of the Duke, including extracts from his papers and correspondence with Wolseley. George served in the Crimea and as Army CIC, 1856-95, instigated numerous reforms, including the Staff College and the seniority system. He was largely responsible for the transition to modern army system.
