Lord Randolph Churchill was Winston Churchill’s first work of biography and an impassioned two-volume defense of his maligned father’s posthumous reputation. It was subsequently issued in an unabridged one-volume edition and is a bulwark of any Churchill collection.
Description
This is a very good First English edition set. The bindings are square and tight, the gilt titles are bright, the cloth is a rich red. There are a few very faint dents to the edges of each front board, a light crease in the front face of Volume I and a more severe dent in the rear face of Volume I . All corners are just a touch crunched or turned.
There is very light, scattered foxing to the prelims of both volumes and vintage bookplates on the front pastedowns of each, together with an inked Woods biblio number. There is also a fading inked date of “March 17th, 1907” on the front free endpapers of both volumes. The frontis photo tissue guard is missing from Volume I (present in Volume II). The tissue guard is also missing from the photograph of Lady Randolph Churchill after page 72.
The contents of both volumes are otherwise fine.
