Description
A very good set of English First editions, all in correct dust jackets, each volume signed in ink by its respective author. The books and contents are virtually mint, including the usually fade-prone topstains, here largely unfaded. All dust jackets are unclipped with the exception of Volume V. Volumes II and III jackets are lightly edge-chipped at the spines, else fine.
An exceedingly handsome set overall, with superb shelf appearance.
Volume I is signed and inscribed by Randolph Churchill on the half-title to Lady Beaverbrook (known to her intimates as “Christofor”), widow of Churchill’s close friend, Lord Beaverbrook: “Christofor with love from Randolph – October 66.” Tipped-in on the pastedown is Lady Beaverbrook’s very discreet name and address plate, along with two news cuttings relating to the October 27, 1966 publication party for this volume at Foyle’s bookstore in London.
Volume II is signed in ink on the half-title: “Randolph S. Churchill”.
Volumes III-VI are each signed in ink on the half-title: “Martin Gilbert, London, 18th March, 1991.”
Volume VII is signed in ink on the half-title: “Inscribed with the author’s regards, Martin Gilbert, Oxford, 1st June, 1988.”
Volume VIII is signed in ink on the half-title: “Inscribed with the author’s regards, Martin Gilbert.”
