A DAUGHTER’S TALE: The Memoirs of Winston and Clementine Churchill’s Youngest Child, by MARY SOAMES, is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary daughter who, drawing on her diaries and her memories, conjures an intimate glimpse of her idyllic childhood at Chartwell, her military service and travels with her father during WWII, his crushing defeat at the end of the war, her marriage and subsequent years as a wife, mother and author. Though she visited our store often, we somehow did not make it into Lady Soames’ memoir.

Nonetheless, it is most deservedly Book #29 in our 40TH READINGS AT CHARTWELL BOOKSELLERS video series, as read by Lady Soames’ own daughter: EMMA SOAMES.

MARY SOAMES (1922-2014) was born on September 15, 1922. She served in London, Belgium and Germany in anti-aircraft batteries, and accompanied her father on several of his overseas wartime journeys, including to the  Potsdam Conference. In 1945 she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), in recognition of her military services, later promoted to Dame Commander, and in 2005  invested as Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter. Author of eight books about the Churchill family,  she married Christopher Soames on February 11, 1947. Together they had five children.

EMMA SOAMES, Mary Soames’ eldest daughter, is an editor, broadcaster and columnist. She edited her mother’s wartime diaries for publication as MARY CHURCHILL’S WAR in 2022, and has served as editor of The Literary Review, Tatler, and the Daily Telegraph magazine.
