A CHURCHILL EVENING WITH LONDON'S MAYOR - BORIS JOHNSON

PLUS, OUR FIRST PODCAST: "WHEN LIONS ROAR," BY THE AUTHOR OF "MASTERS OF SEX"

A CHURCHILL EVENING WITH LONDON'S MAYOR - BORIS JOHNSON

One hundred years ago this summer, Winston Churchill took a seaside cottage for his family at Overstrand near Cromer on England's east coast - Pear Tree Cottage, just across the lawn from Beehive Cottage, where his brother Jack's family vacationed. The Churchills' idyllic summer of 1914 ended on August 4 with Britain's declaration of war against Germany and the commencement of World War One. Winston Churchill nevertheless remarked about that vanished summer: "It is a very happy, sunlit picture in my mind's eye."

We trust your summer of 2014 also constituted a very happy sunlit picture. We welcome you back with news of two great forthcoming events.

TICKETING MR. CHURCHILL

Winston Churchill loved motor cars. But this romance, on occasion, cost him.

TICKETING MR. CHURCHILL

In his book, CHURCHILL STYLE, Chartwell proprietor Barry Singer placed this neat photograph of Churchill “at the wheel” on page 107. He'd uncovered it in the Getty photo archive, where it was uncaptioned, save for a speculative 1925 date. Just lately, however, we located a vintage original wire service print of this very image, with a detailed caption on the back. What it reveals re-renders the photo (and Churchill's facial expression) completely.
